More than a Name Change
Ordinarily in the “Golf Ghosts section you would find post about companies, products and courses that are no longer around. However, periodically, there is an attempt to rescued the brand. Park Mammoth is such a case.
As I stated in another post, I discovered Park Mammoth Golf Course in the late summer of 1970. At that time it was part of a Best Western resort which included tennis courts, a putt-putt course, horseback riding, private cave, and a miniature train that would take you “to and from” the lodge to various points around the complex including the golf course. A collage of Norman Rockwell scenes in real life; that was Park Mammoth Resort.
Over the course of the past 50 plus years, the golf course would periodically changed ownership, even had a name change, Cave Valley GC, but everything stay the same. And, it showed ! So, I can not say I was surprised in early October of 2019 to see the land was on the auction block. All things come to an end, or, “so they say”.
Fast forward almost two years, and a lot has changed to the place formerly known as Park Mammoth Resort, aka Cave Valley.
Chandler Property Management are the new owners and have made significant capital investments to the old course. It’s my understanding the nines have been flipped, therefore the course will play totally different. A new routing means new tee boxes, change in fairways, new greens, and, perhaps, a few penalty areas, as well. Definitely, there is a new pro shop. And, a new name – Park Mammoth Golf Club.
Park Mammoth Golf Club, by almost any measure, will be a brand new course. And, although, I am looking forward to seeing the finished product, I do wonder if adding “Golf Club” at the end of the name is a sign regarding who will be able to play the course. Given that Chandler Property Management purchased 850 areas of the old resort and the capital investment they are putting into the old course, it’s hard to see how a “daily golf fee” could justify the expenditures. Hopefully, as least for the near future, they will keep it as a public / semi-private course.
One thing is for sure, when it opens, it will be an awesome golf experience. Definitely looking forward to teeing it up!
